North West Wales is an area known for its rugged countryside and sometimes difficult farming conditions, but this part of Wales supports a large number of dairy, beef and sheep units. Serving some of these farms is contractor Sion Williams who, from his base at Cerrig-YDrudion, near Corwen, alongside his slurry and muck spreading business, offers a forage harvesting service with his Pottinger Europrofi 3 wagon.

Sion’s family had been operating a Pottinger Mex VI trailed forage harvester on their 450 acre sheep and beef farm for a number of years, so Sion was no stranger to Pottinger’s reliability and build quality. Sion invested in a Pottinger wagon back in 2004. Sion says “I was looking for the opportunity to expand the range of services I offered and one of my larger customers suggested I consider forage harvesting. The low labour requirements with a Pottinger wagon meant I could make this happen without significant investment in a more complex system”.

One of the key features of the Pottinger wagon that appealed to Sion was its ease of use, “I know if I can’t drive the wagon myself I can always put someone else in the seat and within a few minutes they can operate it themselves, it’s that easy to use. My Europrofi 3 wagon is fitted with auto loading and really it’s a simple case of engaging the PTO, lowering the pick up and driving down the swath”.

The weather in this area dictates most of the grass silage work in this area is taken in one cut, so it’s vital that when conditions dictate the grass is gathered efficiently and quickly. “This is where we really score with the Pottinger wagon. We row 30ft of grass into a swath and we travel at 10kmh forward speed even with the large first cut crops”. When it comes to stones, Sion reckons this is where the Pottinger system stands head and shoulders above the rest. “We have no problem with stones, wood and anything else that shouldn’t be there, the individual knives spring down allowing the stone through with no damage, and automatically spring back into its cutting position once it has passed. After 3 years I am still on the original blades which say a great deal for the quality of the Pottinger genuine blades”. So 3 years on what has Sion to say about the Pottinger wagon.
“Its been a great success. All my customers are more than happy with the results, everyone comments how they are achieving more yield from the same amount of forage per cow and I regularly hear that cows are cudding for longer with the wagon made silage. Ultimately it means I will be back again next year on that farm to harvest their silage and that is what really matters”.
