The right trailed roller for autumn drilling

Make the right choice

Pöttinger offers a wide range of trailed rollers for its power harrows especially for the autumn season. The decision in favour of a particular type of trailed roller depends on whether, and to what extent, re-compaction of the soil is desired. On the other hand, the method of re-compaction depends very much on the type of soil and the moisture content of the ground. The important factor is that the seed is provided with the optimum conditions for uniform and stress-free germination. Too fine a structure on the surface can cause mud and crust, which prevent the exchange of gases. A rough, clod-strewn surface, however, makes it difficult to achieve the desired level of cover for the seed.

Trailed rollers that are designed especially for planting, such as disc rollers and cutting packer rollers, provide all the advantages regardless of weather conditions, however extreme and unpredictable they may be. They assist the farmer in performing an efficient and effective planting operation, even under such difficult conditions.

A wide selection of trailed rollers is available, ranging from standard cage drum rollers to packer rollers and rollers with strip-wise compaction (cutting packer rollers and crumbling packer rollers).

Cutting packer roller

Cutting packer roller
Compaction takes place across the width of each individual ring, i.e. 50% of the surface. The special profile of the ring applies pressure right in the path of the seed drill behind.
The remaining 50% of the surface, between the rings, remains untouched and is not compacted. This area offers a high degree of water absorption due to the untouched, porous, non-compacted, loose earth.
The serrated outer contours of each ring make sure that compaction cannot occur beyond the edges. The serrations around the middle penetrate the trough of the indentation so that water can also filter through the compacted lines, preventing water from collecting in the groove created by the roller so that there is no risk of the seedling becoming saturated, even during heavy rainfall.

Crumbling packer roller

Re-compaction takes place in strips. The reduced profile of the teeth - "saw blade teeth" - ensures that the more concentrated compaction is applied in the region of the seed drill behind. This region is limited to around 30% of the total work area. The special shape of teeth draws earth away from the surface and releases it just above the surface to create a perfect crumble structure.
The remaining mass is borne by the roller bodies. This allows these rollers to be used in areas with light soil without sinking in, while they are also ideal for medium-density soils and heavy sticky ground. Across the whole working width of the roller there is no harmful compaction and no skidding. The breathability of the soil is promoted and water entrapment at seed depth is avoided.
