Success factor: the plough
The future in ploughing
The question about the future of ploughing is more a question of the area in which it is used rather than "either - or".
The choice between ploughing and min-tillage is made depending on the soil, previous crop and extent of fusarium. That is why it is clear that the plough will continue to play a major role in tillage on many farms. Especially in cases where crops are planted very soon after harvesting the last crop, in damp conditions and where nutrients are poorly distributed or there is increasing pressure from fusarium or other phytosanitary problems. In such conditions, the use of the plough because a success factor for the farmer because wiping the slate clean minimises the chance of survival for fusarium cells. In addition, the plough amplifies the volume of pores to promote gas exchange. The plough therefore provides the farmer with a reliable yield.
The development of the plough at the Austrian manufacturer Pöttinger has exceeded expectations: the number of ploughs sold has risen sharply and the average number of furrows has also increased. Within the tillage/cultivation segment the plough already accounted for around 25% of sales at Pöttinger during the financial year 2007/08. The demand is consistent in most countries - determined on the one hand by grain prices and on the other hand by the problem of weeds due to intensive farming. Increasing prices for herbicides and the resistance to the them that has evolved over time has also caused a return to the using the plough in some instances.
The family-owned company Pöttinger offers a comprehensive range of reversing ploughs: 2 to 6 furrow mounted ploughs as well as semi-mounted 6 to 9 furrow models. These provide an ideal match to individual requirements from region to region.
| Technical trends - an overview Pöttinger has analysed technical development and trends in the ploughing segment and spurred on their development accordingly. The trend is towards standard mounted ploughs. Regarding the number of furrows and share types, it has been noted that the number of furrows is increasing and that the reversible point solution is preferred. New standards have been set for tractor power requirement and wear parts. Pöttinger operates its own heat treatment centre for tillage equipment wear parts at the Landsberg am Lech plant in Germany, using a state-of-the-art hardening process for hardened and yet tough components. Pöttinger also places great value on the ongoing improvement to traction using dynamic load offsetting system and has already introduced the "Traction Control" system for its ploughs. |
