Pöttinger technology successful in Czech Republic

Jindřich Mana (CZ) swears by grassland machinery from Austria

Jindřich Mana, a farmer from Moravský Beroun in the Olmütz region in the east of Czech Republic farms 1,023 hectares, 408 of which are arable land and the rest meadows and pasture. The farmer breeds 280 dairy cattle without commercial milk production and sells pregnant heifers, beef cattle and livestock for breeding. The farm employs nine people with additional casual labour during the season.
On the arable land Jindřich Mana grows mainly grain crops. The farm is currently undergoing conversion to organic agriculture, which promises to add more value to the farmer's produce. The transition will last two years, so organic produce will not be sold until 2011. In recent years he has invested around 16 million Crowns (approx. EUR 635,000) in converting the livestock unit and hay barn as well as purchasing high performance agricultural technology.

The pasture for the first cut is approx. 200 hectares while the other meadows are used for hay and silage. There is no second cut; the grass is used for grazing. They have had Pöttinger technology in operation since 1999 and currently run five machines. "As far as the loader wagons are concerned, I had always been impressed by the Pöttinger brand. I have enjoyed excellent performance from these machines - they really are the "Mercedes" of all loader wagons.
I started five years ago with a EUROPROFI 3 L, but then I saw a larger wagon in action and bought a JUMBO 7200 L. After three years, in spring 2008, I traded it in for a JUMBO 10000 L and if Pöttinger had an even larger wagon on offer I would buy it on the spot. I am very satisfied with the JUMBO 10000 L it is the decisive machine for harvesting heavy forage crops, silage and hay. I really appreciate its high performance, working quality and reliability. It works at full tilt throughout the season. JUMBO is one of those machines that is really perfect. It solved all my worries about harvesting heavy forage crops, which I can now bring in quickly, on time and to the desired quality. Each year the JUMBO manages 400 hectares of silage and hay, 280 hectares of straw and around 150 hectares of silage as a service for neighbouring farms", says Jindřich Mana. A 230 horsepower tractor handles this wagon effortlessly in the conditions there, although it is in a region with lots of hills and difficult terrain. The land is located at an elevation of between 580 and 700 m. Forage crops are planted mainly on slopes with very stony soil. The farmer regularly weighs loaded wagons. The JUMBO transports around 5 to 6 tonnes of hay or 4 tonnes of straw and up to 16 tonnes of silage – depending on the dry matter content. Regarding the time needed to bring the silage crop into the clamp, with the EUROPROFI it took 10 to 12 days, with the JUMBO 7200 about one week and with the JUMBO 10000 just five days. The furthest away field is 8 km away from the farmyard. The clamp has a capacity of 1,200 tonnes, corresponding with approx. 80 loads of a JUMBO 10000. In addition to improving performance, this wagon also improved the quality of the chopped material and the silage. This is because the shorter the time between filling the clamp and covering it, the higher the quality of the silage. It is very important that the material is properly compressed in the clamp. In practice, the chopped length is between 3.4 and 7 cm, which fully complies with the farmer's requirements. Another piece of kit from Pöttinger that served very well up until last year in these difficult operating conditions was a NOVACAT 360 T CR. This year it was replaced by a NOVACAT 306 F alpha motion front mower with a working width of 6 metres and a rear-mounted NOVACAT 305 H mower, which is designed to save time and manpower for the forage harvest. The farm still uses a NOVACAT 310 T ED from 2001. In 2008 a EUROTOP 801 windrower was replaced after seven years of service by a EUROTOP 851 side swath placement and a working width of over 8 metres, which is powered by a 80 horsepower tractor. "I am also very satisfied with the windrower. It is reliable and can very quickly prepare swaths for the JUMBO 10000 without any serious problems", says Jindřich Mana.
