DRILLING TECHNOLOGY "WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY"
To find such a wide range of soil types from heavy clay to sand within one farming operation in East Anglia is unusual but maybe not so unusual when your drilling commitments can take you up to a 20 mile radius from your base in North East Norfolk. Chris Blaxell drills an annual acreage that has steadily increased to encompass 1,200 acres; no mean feat when you consider Chris carries out all the drilling himself using a 3mtr wide drill. |

Having tried just about every trailed drill on the market with no success Chris was set to give up on the idea when he spotted the Pottinger TERRASEM 3000T during the spring of 2008. “We had got used to being disappointed having tried so many drill systems that just didn’t cope with our wide range of soil types, but upon trying the TERRASEM it soon exceeded our expectations”. |

Every year the Czech privately-owned farms association organises the "Best Farm" competition. The assessment of each farm is based on more than just economic factors – they also assess the appearance of the farm, how the family works together and any developments that are planned. In 2006, the fifth time the competition was held, it was won by a family-run farm in Borkovice near Tábor. The farm belongs to the brothers Zdeněk and Václav Frejlach, with other members of the family helping out as needed. |
At the moment they farm 300 ha, 220 ha of which is arable, 72 pasture and meadow and the remaining 8 ha forest. They grow primarily wheat, rapeseed, triticale, malting barley and forage crops. They breed 90 cattle, of which 48 are dairy with an annual yield of around 8000 kg of milk. "We have been lucky because we've always bred cattle, which puts money in the bank every month. That is how we were able to purchase machines and increase the size of our business" says Zdeněk Frejlach. "The first Pöttinger machine we bought was the BOSS 2 loader wagon, which we bought from Agrozet České Budějovice in 2002. We soon realised that this manufacturer produces powerful, reliable machinery and decided to continue buying their products. Today we own ten Pöttinger machines, practically a complete chain for forage, tillage and seed (SERVO 35 plough, TERRADISC 3000 compact harrow, LION 301 power harrow, VITASEM 301 A mechanical seed drill, TWIST 7001 F4 muck spreader, ROLLPROFI 3300 LSC round baler, ...). All we are missing is the tedder, which we intend to purchase next season. The most recent machine we bought was the muck spreader. We are very satisfied with all of the machines; working with Pöttinger agricultural technology is really something special because you get maximum performance and reliability." |
Eliseo Cofreces from Palencia needed a higher performance seed drill and decided in favour of a TERRASEM 4000T with a working width of four meters. He drilled his 275 hectares of arable fields in combination with a 220 hp tractor in no time. "For me the reduction in costs due to fewer passes and the robust design of the machine really mattered", explains Cofreces, "our stony soil demands a lot from the machine because it requires the highest material and strength specifications." |

Contractor Oscar Andrés also based his investment decision on the large seed hopper and the share system for exact seed placement. He also rates the ease of use as "Bueno", saying "the step-less depth control for the leading tillage tools lets you respond to varying soil conditions without having to leave the cab". |
Jose Antonio García, who grows potatoes and grain on his 225 hectares, is also convinced. "With the 2400 litre seed hopper I can drill eight to ten hectares without stopping. I also really like the trailed pressure rollers that provide the seed with optimum germination conditions and leave behind a tidy soil surface", reports the proud owner. |

Next to his job as mayor of Santervás de Campos (Valladolid), Santiago Baeza also farms approximately 400 ha. He has been using a TERRASEM 3000T since 2004 and is delighted. "With barley I have been able to reduce the quantity of seed by 30 to 40 kg per hectare at the same time as noticeably increasing yield!" explains Santiago. The reason for this is the uniform seed placement depth and spacing, providing ideal conditions for each individual plant. "With my 135 hp tractor I achieve up to three hectares an hour in the larger fields - an enormous increase in performance" says Santiago, extremely satisfied. He uses the time saved to contract out services to other farmers. |
